Gingham Style

Warmer weather has us feeling preppy and picnicky. We have spotted a lot of gingham around the office lately. We’re taking a look back at some great moments in gingham, as well as showcasing a few of our favorite, checkered products.

Great Moments in Gingham

The shoes may get all the press, but whether it was shot in subdued sepia or brilliant technicolor, the classic print of Dorothy’s gingham dress looks picture perfect. (You better start pinching those pennies if you want the original, though.) [Read more...]

In Appreciation of Dr. Seuss

We love a good excuse to celebrate, and this weekend we’re looking forward to marking the 109th anniversary of Dr. Seuss’s birth! We considered writing this post in Seussian verse but figured we should leave the nonsensical rhyming to the master. Instead, here are a few fun ways to incorporate the whimsical bard’s characters and wit into your world.

In Celebration of Pride and Prejudice

This week we are celebrating the 200th anniversary of one of the best-loved books on our bookshelf—Pride and Prejudice! We’re not going to weigh in on the Colin Firth versus Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy discussion (though we do have our favorite), but we are going to take a look at some of our staff’s favorite quotables from this excessively witty work of literature (and a couple other Austen classics for good measure).

Editor, Ande Fanning: “I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than a book!—When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.”
Associate Editor, Kathleen Whaley: “I have not the pleasure of understanding you.”
Assistant Editor, Faith Morgan: “There are few people in England, I suppose, who have more true enjoyment of music than myself, or a better natural taste. If I had ever learnt, I should have been a great proficient.”
Copy Editor, Nancy Ogburn: “I must learn to be content with being happier than I deserve.”
Editorial Coordinator, Becky Goff: “It isn’t what we say or think that defines us, but what we do.”

Check out these fun, artistic interpretations of some of Jane Austen’s other bon mots, and see if you are not quite diverted.

Small Screen Living

Ah, the land of TV—where story lines are wrapped up in a week, the quirky girl always gets the guy, and New York apartments are the size of a suburban ranch house. We can’t make those things happen for you, but we have rounded up some fun accessories from popular TV shows to bring a little Hollywood magic to your home.

Watch Your Step

The ottoman in Rob and Laura Petrie’s living room was a central character in the opening sequence for The Dick Van Dyke Show. We’re not really sure what color it was, but in the spirit of classic black-and-white TV, we think this lovely gray ottoman from Crate & Barrel is a good match.
