In Appreciation of Dr. Seuss
We love a good excuse to celebrate, and this weekend we’re looking forward to marking the 109th anniversary of Dr. Seuss’s birth! We considered writing this post in Seussian verse but figured we should leave the nonsensical rhyming to the master. Instead, here are a few fun ways to incorporate the whimsical bard’s characters and wit into your world.

Show and Tell: Re-create a Downton Abbey-style Wedding for Less
Author and weddings expert Cara Davis shares a few of her favorite tips for throwing an upstairs-style wedding on a downstairs-size budget.
The wedding of the season appears to be that of Downton Abbey‘s Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley. The popularity of the series has brought about a renewed interest in 20s-era fashion, as evidenced by the spring 2013 bridal collection from Jenny Packham and the fall 2013 styles of Sarah Seven.
If the grandeur of the Granthams has you dreaming of vintage touches and ornate headpieces, consider these seven must-haves for a Downton-themed garden wedding.
1. The Venue
Shop around for an all-inclusive wedding package at a bed-and-breakfast, historic mansion, or botanical garden. Package deals can be very affordable, and the more options included, the fewer planning headaches for you. A church ceremony is perfectly suited for a Downton theme, and you can even get away with a quiet reception of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres afterward. [Read more...]
Tea for Two—A Valentine’s Day Bouquet
Instead of giving your valentine cut flowers that will wilt in a few days, pot up a pretty arrangement that can be enjoyed for several months or even year-round. To make this teapot-turned-flowerpot, use a drill fitted with a masonry bit to carefully drill several drainage holes into the bottom of the teapot. (If you’re worried about potential chipping, apply masking tape to the surface before drilling.) Add pebbles to the bottom to help with drainage, fill the pot with potting soil, and set it on a saucer or plate. Just plant a blend of favorite flowers—or a single variety, if you’d rather—and this little project is in the bag.
