In Celebration and Support of Boston

If you’re looking for a bold way to show your support for Boston, Brendan Buckley has created pins that simply state, “Boston’s Not Afraid of You.” All proceeds go directly to The One Fund.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” —Martin Luther King, Jr.

In the wake of what happened at the Boston Marathon, our hearts, though grieved, are filled with hope as we continue to see beautiful things rise above the tragedy. Incredible stories of love, compassion, and community continue to shine like rays of light through the darkness. In addition to our thoughts and prayers, we offer a celebration of Boston and a few of its talented artists in hopes that it will add to the support of that great city and her people.

Boston, we love you!

In Appreciation of Dr. Seuss

We love a good excuse to celebrate, and this weekend we’re looking forward to marking the 109th anniversary of Dr. Seuss’s birth! We considered writing this post in Seussian verse but figured we should leave the nonsensical rhyming to the master. Instead, here are a few fun ways to incorporate the whimsical bard’s characters and wit into your world.

Inspired Artwork

We know that you have probably already put your Christmas decorations away, but we couldn’t help but share this artist’s work.

According to the artist’s website, “for Tazewell, life is a gumbo—rich with spice, madness included.” While artist Tazewell finds most of his inspiration in and around his Mississippi gulf coast home, some of his work is out of this world (literally! Tazewell designed the Auburn University flag that was left on the moon by fellow Auburn alumnus, astronaut Ken Mattingly.)

While he works in many media, some of Tazewell’s most popular works come from his clay nativity series. Double-fired with colorful glazes, these pieces are far from Christmas kitsch. The simple designs and crisp colors speak to Tazewell’s background in graphic design and advertising.

Purchase artwork and learn more about Tazewell on his website.

Spelling Out Art

As a graphic designer, June Corley always enjoyed “playing with type.” Now as a sculpture artist, June continues her playing, but instead of using the meanings that letters symbolize to compose her designs, she uses the forms of the letters themselves to create unique assemblages. Five years ago, she began using her extensive collection of vintage letters and typography to create her artwork full time. The whimsical pieces bring together a vast array of letters and discarded found objects into playful faces and animals. The best and most playful of her pieces happen organically. “When a sculpture is successful,
it’s usually because I’ve managed to stay out of the way,” June says.
