Small Screen Living

Ah, the land of TV—where story lines are wrapped up in a week, the quirky girl always gets the guy, and New York apartments are the size of a suburban ranch house. We can’t make those things happen for you, but we have rounded up some fun accessories from popular TV shows to bring a little Hollywood magic to your home.

Watch Your Step

The ottoman in Rob and Laura Petrie’s living room was a central character in the opening sequence for The Dick Van Dyke Show. We’re not really sure what color it was, but in the spirit of classic black-and-white TV, we think this lovely gray ottoman from Crate & Barrel is a good match.

Quick Fixes and Updates

Sometimes it’s hard to make an apartment feel like home. Whether you’re off to school and in your first apartment, or you’re a home renter, here’s a couple of great ideas to infuse “you” into the space without waving goodbye to your deposit. (Of course, you should always check with your apartment manager with questions about restrictions in your lease.)

PS—Trying to accommodate your kid’s or teen’s changing taste? These are also great ideas for quick updates to his or her bedroom and bathroom that don’t require an expensive complete overhaul.

Switch Out Hardware
A simple screwdriver is often all you need to change the look of kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities. Simply remove the standard knobs and pulls, and replace them with your own. The same is true for doorknobs and the wall plates on your switches and electrical outlets. You can easily reattach the old ones before you move out.

Frilly floral knobs, like these from Anthropologie, are sweet and girly.

Bin pulls are always chic and classic in a kitchen, and you can find them at almost any hardware store. These are from The Home Depot.

Ruffles & Stuff

One of our favorite bloggers is Disney Powless of Ruffles & Stuff. She designed this darling headband (modeled by Disney and her precious little girl, Paige) for our Summer 2011 issue. It’s the perfect DIY preppy accessory for a first-day-of-school outfit.

Be sure to check out Disney’s two projects from the “Crafts for Kids” section of the Holidays issue of fresh style.
